Sedation Dentistry

Even though we have amongst the best practitioners in the territory and there are continual advancements in dental technology that make dental treatment as quick and painless as it has ever been, it can still be daunting to come to a dental practice, particularly if you feel like you may have multiple, complex and expensive dental issues.

We have some tips to consider before your dental visit to assist with reducing dental anxiety:

Consider having a check up only

Much of the anxiety is fear of the unknown, e.g. not knowing what options are available and the associated costs. Many places only offer the option of a full package, e.g. check-up, clean, x-rays, fluoride treatment etc., while we give you the option of just having a painless check up only. So at minimal cost you have the knowledge of how to get back to optimal dental health. X-rays are generally recommended and that is something you can discuss with the practitioner and choose not to proceed with.

Find a practitioner that makes you feel confident with your teeth

We are here to help, not to judge or put you down for not coming in to deal with your dental issues earlier. Everyone deserves a healthy smile!

Space out your dental appointments to deal with issues in order of priority

Not everything needs to be done as soon as possible, so if finances or dental anxiety are of concern, we recommend to deal with the most urgent dental issue first, before they become painful and therefore more likely to be more expensive and have to spend more time in the dental chair, if neglected for too long. Then our practitioner will inform you of the next best time to deal with the next most urgent dental issue, whether that is in a month or two or even later on.

Find a practitioner that is confident in their work and that can offer guarantees

With over 650 5-star reviews (and counting) and our 5-year guarantee for fillings and 10-year for crowns, we have the utmost confidence in our work. Does your dentist offer any guarantees?

Here are the available options for sedative dentistry, all of which

should be discussed with the dental practitioner prior to administration:

1. Nitrous Oxide or "Laughing Gas"

A safe, inhaled sedative used in dentistry to reduce anxiety and pain, inducing a calm, relaxed, or euphoric state. It takes effect in minutes, and because it wears off quickly after breathing pure oxygen, patients can typically drive home immediately after the procedure. It is used for both adults and children.

2. Penthrox (methoxyflurane) or the "green whistle"

A fast-acting, non-opioid, inhaled analgesic delivered via a handheld, green whistle inhaler for treating moderate-to-severe acute pain. It is commonly used in emergency, trauma, and procedural settings. Patients self-administer the medication under supervision, offering rapid relief within 6–10 breaths. Not recommended for patients under 18, those with kidney/liver disease, or pregnant patients.

Patients should not drive or operate machinery for at least 24 hours after using Penthrox, as it can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and decreased alertness. Therefore, a designated driver should be organised for after the appointment.
