Why an Extraction Might Be Necessary?
We typically recommend an extraction only when other restorative options—such as a filling/crown or root canal—are no longer viable. Common reasons include:
Severe Decay or Infection: When a tooth is too damaged to support a crown or filling.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth: When wisdom teeth do not have enough room to emerge fully, causing recurring pain.
Preparation for Orthodontics: Creating space to properly align your smile with braces or clear aligners.
Advanced Gum Disease: When periodontitis has destroyed the bone and tissue supporting the tooth, causing the tooth to become loose and tender to eat on.
Wisdom Teeth Extraction
In the vast majority of cases, wisdom teeth can actually be extracted in a dental clinic under local anaesthetic, with the option of light sedation (Learn More), such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas). This will save time and money compared to seeing a specialist. Specialist referral would be considered, if the extraction is considered risky or if there is preference for stronger sedation.
